An embroidered patch featuring the flag of Ohio, a state within the American federal system. Famous for being the only state without a standard-shaped flag, I decided to take that way from them and keep it normalized. The state itself is named for the Ohio River, which in turn takes it's name from the Seneca people's word "ohi:yo", meaning Great River. Ohio was inhabited by nomadic people as far back as 13,000 BC, but by 800 BC, the Adena culture had emerged in the area. They would become the Hopewell people before declining by 600 AD.
It was around this time that the Mississippian and their contemporary cultures (such as the Fort Ancient peoples) thrived, before also "vanishing" by the 17th century. Since these cultures did not keep written records, and colonialism does not care to preserve the heritage of it's victims, we don't really know what happened to this cultures. They could have been absorbed by others (such as the Shawnee), pushed further west by the emerging Iroquois, or perhaps annihilated through disease they had no resistance to that were brought over from Europe. Either way, it's now famous for being part of several memes, having weird billboards, and having conflicting feelings about whether they're Appalachian or not.
