An embroidered patch featuring a 7.62x51mm round along with its measurements and other classifying information. The 7.62 NATO round was developed from .300 Savage experiments being done in the 1940s. While the rest of NATO wanted to simplify logistics around an intermediate cartridge, American forces wanted their round to be homemade and a full-sized round. Due to bureaucracy and politics, the 7.62x51 cartridge was adopted as the NATO standard, and intermediate rounds were put on the back burner. Resulting from the same development and experimental rounds, the commercial .308 Winchester round is dimensionally similar to the NATO round, except they tend to be loaded to slightly higher pressures. With 7.62 NATO and .308 being extremely common hunting rounds, and utilized by machine guns and DMRs within the US armed forces, it is a good idea to get familiar with it's performance and the platforms that utilize it.
